Utah 2022-23 Ski Season off to its best start in almost 20 years
Once again we are reminded why Utah can lay claim to The Greatest Snow on Earth® as Utah’s ski resorts boast their best winter opening in the past 20 years with all 15 of Utah’s ski resorts opened for business for the 2022-23 ski season.
As is so often the case, winter arrived in an instant in Utah. From a record warm September and mild early October to snow arriving like a freight train in late October. Mother Nature is here to remind everyone dust off the ski equipment, strap on the ski and snowboard boots and book your next trip to Utah because it’s going to be a cracker of a season.
Several snowstorms have dropped upwards of 2.5m of snow in the Wasatch Range of northern Utah, including the Cottonwood Canyons. The snowstorms that have pounded Utah’s mountains couldn’t have come at a better time in the year for Utah’s 15 resorts, says Nathan Rafferty, the president and CEO of Ski Utah.
While the snow totals are impressive, what is even more impressive is the water content contained in this snow. The mixture of moisture and cold air from the storms helped resorts maximize their snow manufacturing operations, so they could tack onto what Mother Nature provided. Utah’s snowpack as the storms wrapped up last week was sitting at 433% of the normal average for this time of year.
Zach Fyne, Global Markets Specialist from the Utah Office of Tourism said, “What this means is incredible snowpack has led to more terrain being open and available this early in the season. As a matter of fact, it’s the best in nearly 20 years.” Fyne went on to say, “I’ve been skiing Utah’s resort early in the season for the past six years and I’ve never seen resorts already opened to 75 or 90% by December 1st.”
Of Utah’s 15 resorts, 10 are within an hour of the Salt Lake City International Airport making it easy for visitors to get out of the airport and onto the slopes in record time.
