Tequila, Lime and Salt Lake City
Better known as a gateway to some of the best skiing in North America, Salt Lake City has now, somewhat unexpectedly, found itself as America’s latest craft cocktail hotspot. Recently described as a “super cool hipster haven” by the Boston Globe, a raft of new bars have opened across Utah’s capital city since a key change in local alcohol legislation earlier this year. Ranging from a semi-hidden speakeasy to chic cocktail lounges, the city is attracting top mixologists from across the US and beyond, serving everything from an Old Fashioned to Dirty Girl Scouts. Three of the best new venues include:
- Whiskey Street: Before it was changed to Main Street in 1906, Salt Lake City’s main thoroughfare was officially designated “Whiskey Street.” Hence the name of this swanky drinking den specializing in “spirituous liquors”
- Bodega & The Rest: A diminutive, dimly-lit tavern on Main Street with a hip speakeasy vibe, papered with vintage Playboy covers and antique furniture. Find The Rest hidden directly beneath Bodega (look for the half-lit restroom sign and don’t miss its infamous (and absolutely delicious) beer-can chicken
- Under Current: A chic, upscale cocktail bar that has an impressively lengthy cocktail list (59 to be precise), with an emphasis on absinthe and amari. You can forget the peanuts too – the bar snacks here include a fine selection of fresh oysters
Premier Park City Offerings for 2017/18 Ski Season
Last year, Utah achieved another record-breaking ski season welcoming 4.58 million visitors, surpassing its previous record by three percent. Not only does Utah boast the Greatest Snow on Earth®, but the state’s skiing is so fantastic due to the proximity of its 14 resorts and the unique qualities and variety of each. Arguably the most globally renowned is Park City. Three new offerings for the 2017/18 ski season include:
- Utah is the only place in North America where skiers have access to the Rossignol Pursuit-Strato skis. Through Ski Butlers, a Park City based company, the Waldorf Astoria Park City offers guests exclusive access to ten pairs of these skis, which are perfect for carving beautiful lines into that freshly groomed Park City Mountain
- The Montage Deer Valley is expanding its Montage Expeditions program with excursions to Yellowstone National Park. Guests can ski the famed slopes of Deer Valley as well as take a once-in-a-lifetime day trip adventure to Yellowstone or one of the Mighty 5® in southern Utah led by a Montage guide, complete with private flight aboard a Pilatus-12 and a gourmet, chef-prepared lunch
- Skiers can uncover the secrets of the past and discover Park City’s rich mining, skiing and local history on the Silver to Slopes Historic Mining Tour on Park City Mountain. On this free, guided ski tour, visitors will explore the mountain with an expert guide and learn about the historic mining buildings and hidden relics scattered across the resort
Running Wild in Utah
Utah is one of the ultimate road trip destinations, but the rugged mountain state is also speedily emerging as a road running mecca. With some of the most spectacular roadside scenery in the US, it’s no surprise that Utah’s popularity among runners of all ages, levels and abilities has seen a swathe of competitive races emerge in recent years. Running is an excellent way to engage with the state’s remarkable landscape, used so often as a Hollywood backdrop. Three races for travellers to enter include:
- Sand Hollow Marathon: Southern Utah’s leading marathon, this route starts and finishes in the beautiful little town of Hurricane. The star of the show, however, is Sand Hollow State Park – a picture-perfect rural setting near the edge of Zion National Park, only two hours from Las Vegas by car (March 2018)
- Utah Midnight Run: This one has something for everyone – 5K, 10K and half-marathon – and is contested under a full moon, glow sticks in hand. The idea is to ‘chase the midnight hour’ along picturesque Legacy Highway, making it to the finish line before the clock strikes 12 (June/July 2018)
- Top of Utah Races: Fast and beautiful, this Northern Utah race series ranges from full and half marathons to the popular 15K Top of Utah Freedom Run. The route slices through some of the most gorgeous mountain scenery in the US, but is notoriously flat. Plus the marathon doubles as a Boston qualifier (July-September 2018)
